SDCGN Poster Contest Guidelines

Connecting With Nature in Community Gardens

 Who May Enter

Entries may be submitted by any student enrolled in a public, private, home, or parochial school in the county of San Diego.

Collection

Posters will be collected and submitted by SDCGN members.  Posters will be judged according to the following categories:

  • Ladybugs——-Grades————–K-3
  • Bumble Bees——-Grades———– 4-6
  • Monarchs——— Grades————7-8
  • Hummingbirds—-All Grades—— Special Education

Deadline for Entry

Completed posters must be submitted to representatives of the SDCGN by April 16.

One poster from each category will be judged and chosen by members of the SDCGN poster committee.  All posters become the property of the SDCGN and may not be returned.

Posters will be judged according  to the following  criteria

  1. Relationship of the design to the theme.
  2. Originality.
  3. Visual impact and clarity of the poster design.
  4. Artwork and its execution
  5. Winners will be determined by majority rule.

The finalist will be chosen from one of the categorical winners.

Prizes

  • $100.00 Barnes and Noble gift certificate to the winner.
  • Raised bed garden to class of the winner.
  • $25.00 Barnes and Noble Gift Certificates to the winner of each grade category.

Finalist and his or her family will receive:

  • Recognition at the Celebration of Community Gardens Festival on May 19.
  • Framed original poster.
  • Prizes awarded in finalist category.

Category winners and their families will be invited to receive their awards at the Celebration of Community Gardens Festival on May 19.

Poster Specifications

Completed poster shall be 12”x 18” on heavy white tag or construction paper with a 1” space at the bottom where blank entry blank shall be mounted.  Poster may be designed on horizontal or vertical axis.  Entry blank or a reasonable facsimile, with all required information typed or printed and signed by teacher shall be securely attached to bottom left hand corner of the poster entry.

Poster Theme

This year’s theme:  Connecting with Nature in Community Gardens.  The poster illustration shall harmonize with the theme and contain the concepts, community, and connecting with nature.  To be considered eligible the contestants shall illustrate theme. Illustrations shall be positive in approach.

Lettering

Freehand-drawn letters only, may be used in design.  Stencils, preprinted stick-on, or computer generated lettering will not be accepted.  All lettering, if used, should be clearly legible.

Coloring and Media

There is no limitation of use and number of colors, with examples being felt pens, water colors, crayons, etc. that can be used on poster.  Please do not use tempera paint, as it has a tendency to flake.  Three dimensional materials, such as wood; metal; glass; or a collage approach should not be used.  Poster designs may not incorporate a copyrighted character (i.e. comic or graphic illustrations).

Judging

          Posters should be submitted to SDCGN representatives by April 16 in order to be considered for judging.

All posters shall be judged on the following criteria:

  1. Relationship of the poster design to connecting with nature in the community garden.
  2. Originality of the poster and how the idea is expressed in the poster design.
  3. Artwork and its execution.
  4. Visual impact of the poster design.

 

All posters become the property of the San Diego Community Garden Network.  The right to modify any poster for reproduction is reserved for the SDCGN.

Prize Distribution

  • Winning participants will be notified upon decision of winning posters. Winning participants and their posters will be presented at the Community Garden Network Fair Poster Contest Award Ceremony on May 19, 2012. If winning participants cannot be present for the award presentation they will receive their award at their respective school.
